A Hand-Twisted Hulu Gourd on a Bodhi Bead Loop

This is a natural bottle gourd charm — hulu in Chinese, calabash in older European use — about 6 cm (2.4 in) tall, strung on a hand-tied cord with a star-and-moon bodhi bead loop, a single red-brown rudraksha bead, a carved ivory-nut cat paw, and warm peach wood beads. The gourd keeps its dried stem, called the dragon head, exactly as it grew. Total length is about 24 cm (9.5 in) and it weighs 55–60 g.

In Chinese households the gourd is carried as a symbol of good fortune — the word hulu sounds close to fulu, meaning fortune and prosperity — and its rounded double-bellied shape is said to hold luck inside while keeping harm out. This one is small enough to sit in a palm, which is why it is made to be handled: the bodhi loop slips over a finger and the gourd turns as you roll it.

What's on the Cord

  • Star-and-moon bodhi loop — small cream seeds with a single dark eye, strung into a ring that fits over one finger and works as a fidget loop.
  • Rudraksha bead — one deep red-brown textured seed at the top of the loop, the traditional counterweight on Chinese hand-played strings.
  • Carved cat paw — a small ivory-nut bead carved into a four-toe paw, pale cream with a soft polish.
  • Peach wood beads — warm orange-brown wooden beads between the paw and the gourd; peach wood is the traditional lucky wood in Chinese folk practice.
  • The gourd — sun-cured and hand-polished, deep amber-brown from being handled, with the dried stem left intact.

Two Ways to Use It

  • As a hand fidget. The loop goes over a finger and the gourd rolls against your thumb — the same motion people use with a worry stone, but with something that has a shape and a weight.
  • As a hanging charm. Thread the loop onto a bag strap, a key ring, a rearview mirror, or a hook by the door. At 60 g it hangs without pulling anything out of shape.

Size and Details

  • Gourd: about 6 cm tall, 4–4.5 cm across the belly (2.4 × 1.7 in)
  • Total hanging length: about 24 cm (9.5 in)
  • Weight: 55–60 g
  • Materials: natural bottle gourd, star-and-moon bodhi seed, rudraksha seed, ivory nut, peach wood, cotton-wax cord
  • No lacquer, no dye, no plastic parts

Good to Know

Every gourd is grown, dried and polished by hand, so the shape, the amber tone and the little marks on the skin differ from piece to piece — some are rounder, some lean, some have a fainter stem. That is the character of a natural gourd, not a defect, and it means no two pieces are identical. The one you receive will not be the exact one in the photos.

Keep it dry. Wipe with a soft dry cloth; do not wash it, soak it, or leave it in a bathroom or a car in direct summer sun for long periods. Natural gourds are hygroscopic — repeated damp and rapid drying is what makes them crack. Handled dry and regularly, the surface slowly deepens in colour, which is the whole point of a hand-played gourd.

Small parts: the beads and the carved paw are not intended for children under three.

Questions

How big is the gourd, really?
About 6 cm (2.4 in) tall and 4–4.5 cm (1.6–1.8 in) across the belly, with the whole string about 24 cm (9.5 in) long. It fits in the palm of an adult hand — the photo of it resting on a hand shows the real scale.

Is the gourd real, or resin?
Real. It is a natural bottle gourd grown, sun-cured and hand-polished, with the dried stem still attached. Because it is natural, the shape and colour vary slightly from piece to piece.

What are the beads made of?
The ring is star-and-moon bodhi seed, the dark bead at the top is rudraksha, the pale paw is carved ivory nut, and the warm orange beads are peach wood. The cord is cotton-waxed, tied by hand.

Will the gourd crack?
Not if you keep it dry. Natural gourds crack from repeated moisture followed by fast drying — so don't wash it, don't leave it in a steamy bathroom, and don't leave it on a car dashboard in summer. A dry wipe and regular handling keep it sound for years.

Can I actually hang it, or is it only for holding?
Both. The bodhi loop is strong enough to thread onto a bag strap, key ring or rearview mirror, and the piece weighs about 60 g so it hangs without dragging. Many people use the loop over a finger to roll the gourd instead.

Is it a good gift?
It is a common good-luck gift for housewarmings, new jobs, graduations and Lunar New Year, because the gourd stands for fortune and protection. It arrives ready to give, tied and finished — no assembly.
